Artifacts and History A visit to the museum is an interesting way to
learn all about the Rock. It was opened on the 23rd July, 1930 by the
Governor of the day, Sir Alexander Godley. The original collection of
exhibits came from the Gibraltar Scientific Society, private collections
and some from Great Britain. The museum is governed by a committee and
in 1966 it decided that a curator with both local and professional knowledge
should be appointed. Since then the museum building has been organised
so that each of the rooms is in chronological order. It has 10 rooms which
show Gibraltar`s history over the ages. Amongst them are:- A display of
the fauna and flora in Gibraltar. The Gibraltar skull (replica of the
first Neandertal skull found in Europe). The original was discovered at
Forbe`s Quarry 8 years before the one found in the Neandertal valley.
An 1865 model of the Rock. A 14th century Moorish bath house. Tools and
ornaments excavated in the Rock`s caves, used by cavemen. Phoenician,
Greek, Roman, Spanish, Moorish and British displays covering periods of
the Rock`s history.
Moorish Bath House
Under Bomb House and Ordnance House which makes up the Gibraltar Museum
is a moorish bath house dating from the 14th century.
