| Greek Islands. Chania Description: The museum is housed in the katholikon of the Venetian monastery of St. Francis. During the period of the Turkish occupation it was the Muslim mosque of Yussuf Pasha, while in modern times it was used as a cinema or a storehouse for military equipment. Since 1963 it has been functioning as the Archaeological Museum of the city. Maritime Museum of Crete Description: The Maritime Museum of Crete was founded in Chania to shelter, protect and exhibit our naval traditions - esspesialy Cretan naval tradition - which have always be source of National survival and inspiration. In these web pages are briefly presented the contexts and activities of our Mousem, having the ambition to spread the in every corner of Greece and adroad. Paros Description: The museum was founded in 1960, when a large room was built next to the High School, to house the antiquities which were until then kept in the cells of the Katapoliani monastery. Rethymnon Description: Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon has been housed in the pentagonal building opposite the main gate of the Fortetsa. The building was constructed by the Turks in an effort to strengthen the city's defence. Samos Description: The exhibits are housed in two buildings: a) The Old Museum, built in 1912 and formerly housing the "Paschaleion archives". b) The New Museum which was inaugurated in 1987 and contains the Archaic sculpture collection. The building was erected at the expense of the "Volkswagen" cultural foundation. Andros Description: The museum, which has a total floor area of 200 sq. m., was designed by architect Stamos Papadakis, and was intended to exhibit the collection of works by Andriot sculptor, Michael Tombros, which he bequeathed to his native island. The exhibits were further enriched by part of the collection of the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation. Lesvos One side of the building houses the Museum’s permanent exhibition (Petrified Forest Room and Aegean Room), the other includes a conference room, an audio-visual center, a tastefully designed snack bar with a magnificent view of the Aegean sea, Museum administration offices, a temporary exhibition hall, library, as well as fossil preservation and research laboratory. The Ouzo Museum Description: The Ouzo Museum was created with love and passion of the Barbayannis family for the production of ouzo. This museum is located next to the modern, privately-owned distilleries of the Barbayannis alcoholic beverage production facilities. Soufli Description: The Silk Museum is housed in the Kourtidis Mansion (1883) in the town of Soufli (Prefecture of Evros, Thrace), which belongs to the Cultural Foundation of the Hellenic Bank of Industrial Development (ETBA). The Museum was set up in 1990 and is managed by the Municipality of Soufli in association with the ETBA Cultural Foundation. Spetses Description: The Spetses Museum is housed in the mansion of Chatzigiannis-mexis, one of the leding notables of the island at the time of the Great War of Indipendence. It was bult from 1795-98 and consists of a ground floor and two upper storeys. Only the first floor is open to the public. Heraklion Description: The museum of Agricultural History and Popular Art is an additional part of the cultural "fresco" of AROLITHOS. The exhibits are precious elements of Cretan civilization and they are displayed to the public in order to achieve its spiritual and historical training. Additionally, the museum contributes to the identification and distinction of the Cretan identity, which is different from that of the other nations. Vergina Description: Vergina, a village in Imathia, is 12 km from Veroia, 75 km from Thessaloniki, and 515 km from Athens. It has enjoyed worldwide renown in the past few decades, owing to the discovery there of the ancient city of Aigai, the ancient capital of the Macedonian kings, and its cemetery. Of particular note are the tombs of the royal dynasty, most notably King Philip II and a young prince who is identified as Alexander IV, and a cist grave. The royal tombs were discovered in 1977-8 by the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. |
